The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation's Virtual Republic
Be a part of the online debate in The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s Virtual Republic! In this free digital online companion resource to Colonial Williamsburg’s secondary education curriculum, The Idea of America, middle- and high-school students engage with current-events media to learn the nuanced policy behind issues affecting life today. The History in the Making podcasts and Nutshell History animated videos provide an in-depth perspective on the historical roots of current issues. After students inform themselves of existing policy, they propose solutions in the form of policy statements. By posting these statements, students can engage in civil discussion with their peers across the nation. For students to put their words into actions, the Virtual Republic provides community-action resources that support active membership in the local or national community in their areas of interest. Let your voice be heard at the Virtual Republic!

This is a great idea! Would you recommend it for 5th graders? Or is it specifically geared for older students?

I have the same question.

I think that you Leslie and Mary could use for the 5th grade, just simplify the issue a bit and they will run with it.

Hi there, Leslie and Mary! The Virtual Republic gears its content towards upper middle- and high-school students. Teachers of upper elementary students can adapt or modify any of the content as they see fit. Hope that helps!
